maya lin: untitled topographic landscape

admin » 20 March 2009 » In mfa » No Comments

this piece was built in sections and then connected onsite. (a possible solution to the size constraint I am faced with by the laser cutter)

on a side note:
i watched an interview of Maya Lin where she was asked how she names her pieces.
i was struck by her answer that names come to her after a piece is created.  i think this will also be the case with my piece.

maya lin exhibition: systematic landscapes

@ the henry art gallery Apr 22,2006–Sep 3,2006

i really love this piece by maya lin (blue lake pass).  she reorganizes a terrain from colorado into a geologic experience that is split into 3′x3′ sections.  it gives one a new sense of topography that I love.

i also find it to be a beautiful new approach to “the map”….taking the terrain into a 3D experience.

Cooper Hewitt: fashioning felt

admin » 20 March 2009 » In mfa » No Comments

this was a great show!  i really loved all the new approaches to design via felt.  i am inspired to use industrially fabricated felt in the future.

sculptural books

the thing i love most about brian dettmer‘s work is the variety of shapes and carvings he does.  his choice of books really appeal to me too because I grew up looking up words in a giant dictionary and maps in large almanacs like the one below. (shout out to Joana for the link!)

made from romance novels (above)

medical books

architecture ideas

Hsiang Ju turned me on to this architecture book “Beyond Architecture: Imaginative Buildings and Fictional Cities”.  It looks really cool. Check out some of the imagined spaces in it below.

*side note:  i might want to look into an Axonometric projection of my final video.  It gives the perception an elevation and sectional view simultaneously.  This way I can show depth and movement across space.

**last note: looking down on something increases interest by focusing ones vision (no distractions.) see: Joan Ockman “Architecture in a Mode of Distraction: Eight Takes on Jacques Tati’s Playtime”
