ideas

03.21.10 - Color coated streets
Layers of different colored compressed sand (or semi-hard surface material) that wears down, with high foot traffic, to reveal new patterns and colors.  The people traveling through the space create the design pattern.  High traffic areas become visible and are represented in a large-scale color coded map of pedestrian traffic.  The sidewalk reveals layers of color, the same way a piece of candy (like a gobstopper) reveals different colors the more it is consumed.

02.08.10 - Obscurity Rewards
A series of net art tools that reward users with “small” social networks.  As networks increase to several thousand subscribers/followers/friends, the conversation breaks down and as a result creativity is lost to a swarm of “viewers” rather than “participants”.  How can we encourage participation and avoid the stagnation that occurs when social circles inflate beyond capacity?

01.04.10 - Google Search List
Concept: Conduct an experiment to log a weeks worth of Google searches done by my friends.  Emily, who is an avid list maker/hypochondriac would be a good one to profile!  Although, there are others who might surprise me.

12.28.09 - Topo Snow
Concept:
Salt topo lines on roads after a freshly fallen snow.

12.18.09 - Credit Card Ritual
Observation: People go through a strange set of rituals when handing over credit cards to a store clerk.  Some casually toss it on the counter (out of reach of the clerk), some make a grand gesture arch from wallet to clerk’s hand, others lay it on the counter and snap down one corner.  There are a few other versions (such as the horizontal karate chop, or slow motion move), but somehow it all turns into a micro theatrical show where the customer is the center of attention and the clerk is the “amazed” audience.  Interesting how people treat their cards and interact with others.  The space between the customer and clerk becomes a point of ‘literal’ interaction where touching and invasion of personal space is allowed only for a moment!
Possible Concept: Film multiple hand offs from above and compare different styles by playing them all continuously in a large grid.  Focus on moment of interaction.

08.03.09 - Topo Map (scale = 1:1)
Concept:
Draw topo lines back onto the earth (place actual elevation linework back onto the ground, and other map elements… i.e. north arrow, scale, map key).  Every 10′ of elevation draw a line with baseball chalk on the ground.  Cover an entire street (preferably a hill) with the actual elevation linework.

08.03.09 - Death and the Internet
Concept:
Project addressing how we deal with death and the online profiles and other “traces” of those who have passed on. (virtual memorials)

08.01.09 - Solar Kit
Concept:
What better way to communicate the power of solar than a little “build your own” solar kit?  The kit includes not only a little solar panel, but also pre-assembled electronic parts that connect with magnets to ensure proper polarity connections.  The kit could be an educational tool for kids (or adults) to learn about solar and basic electronics.
Kit ideas:
solar powered car, solar powered LED lightbulb, solar powered energy gauge displaying amount of energy gathered.

07.30.09 - Tour de Beat
Concept:
I love the tour, but it gets a bit boring.  what if the footage turned on only when riders’ heartrates were above a certain number.  you know its only exciting when they really get cranking!
How:
gather live heartrate data from Tour de France riders to “power” streaming Tour coverage.  The higher the heartrate the clearer(?) the picture.  Ability to change data between favorite riders.

07.30.09 - Four Corners

Question: where are the four corners of the earth?
Concept: manipulated google earth to represent user determined locations of the 4 corners.  chronological database of all corners input as well as most common.
